Nintendo – Starfox U.S. Unveiling @ Winter CES 1993 – Las Vegas, NV
January 1993, Nintendo unveiled its first polygon shooter Starfox for the Super NES. This was the first game equipped with the SUPER FX chip which was a custom RISC processor programmed to act like a graphics accelerator chip to draw polygons to a frame buffer in the RAM sitting adjacent in the SNES hardware. Nintendo presented the game inside a giant 360 degree "Space Dome" complete with a laser light show and a few sit-down Starfox demo kiosks. It was truly a spectacular event you had to have been there in-person to experience this. In 2007, Dylan Cuthbert ( President of Q-Games ) sat down to talk about his role in developing games leading up to Starfox and his relationship with Nintendo. The Starfox laser footage can also be seen in the interview - check it out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wghaeiwkey&feature=channel_page
wow, nintendo back then really knew how to put on a show, fast foward to 2008 and the biggest game we get is wii music.
Nintendo knew how to put on a show when there was no guidelines. Its just in the last two Expos were restricted. E3 organization IDSA had shrunken the Expo dramatically. Nintendo adapted accordingly to the guidelines. E3 attendance had dropped since those restrictions took place. We’ve been told E3 2009 should be back to normal since 2006. Nintendo was always known to have humongous booths. We’ll see what’ll happen this year ^_^
ok this is amazing!!!! That light show was awesome. I wish I was there. Starfox was kickass!
You must of had a top day, I was at the Nintendo UK launch show in London (93), I had a great time there. I entered the time trial comp & played through the heats. After winning my group I played on the huge projector screen!
