All of those hours spent chainsawing and torque-bowing your pals online during the "Gears of War 3" multiplayer beta have really added up. Microsoft announced today that over 1.29 million people played the beta, culminating in over 11 million multiplayer matches through the program's four-week period. Additionally, the company announced that pre-orders for "Gears of War 3" have topped one million worldwide.
That one-million pre-order mark is a pretty hefty achievement. The massive amount of people who put their five bucks down on the game makes it the fastest Xbox-exclusive title to reach that point in history. That's fairly incredible when you factor in popular game franchises like "Halo."
The company also stated that over 927 million kills were recorded during the course of the beta, of which I assuredly contributed a large portion – I enjoy "Gears of War" multiplayer, I just suck at it. The beta also included an opportunity to earn a couple unlockables when the full game launches, e.g. a Golden Lancer rifle and an exclusive skin for Cole Train. Over 234,000 and 435,000 players actually achieved those goals, respectively.
If you're looking to jump on the bandwagon, "Gears of War 3" is currently available for pre-order from your retailer of choice. The game is launching in three flavors: standard, Limited Edition, and Epic Edition. The latter costing $150 and being chock-full of collectibles also contains a Marcus Fenix statue.
One statistic was left out: the amount of kills meted out from the end of a sawed-off shotgun. If I had a dime for every time someone blew my head off with that weapon, I'd have...well, I probably still wouldn't have enough to afford that Epic Edition.
