PlayStation 3′s 3D Blu-Ray Update Stalled Until October

June's PlayStation 3 firmware release didn't include 3-D Blu-ray capabilities, but Sony is on the case, and they've announced that the expected update will instead come in October. Some thought the feature might arrive in September, but Sony has cleared the air and committed to next moth.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer didn't set a specific date, but he was comfortable enough to pick a month during a speech at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) show in Berlin, according to Engadget.
Given the low count of 3-D Blu-ray movies that are out on the market, I can't imagine that this development is going to crush too many dreams. "Avatar" is probably the most anticipated title coming to the home 3-D market, and PS3 support for TV's will almost certainly still beat it into stores.
As for 3-D games, "MotorStorm 3D" and a version of "Wipeout" are already on sale, so you can watch a friend play those and pretend like you're watching a movie if you feel so depressed about this news that you need to extract yourself from reality and find a magical imaginary world where 3-D movies on the PS3 are fully accessible.
The trickle of 3-D content in general has been gradual since Sony began shipping its Bravia TV's this summer, but September will still give them plenty of time to reach consumers with an appropriate media player in time for 3-D media holiday shopping.
Is the October shift for 3-D on the PS3 going to ruin September for you? What movies do you want to pick up when it eventually comes out? Share your answers in the comment section below.
‘Dead Space 2′ Multiplayer Confirmed

One of the most impressive demos I saw during E3 was "Dead Space 2." It's not that it really broke new ground for the franchise, just a few updates here and there, but it just looked so polished, and it was a blast to play. I had no doubts there was fun to be had with this game, but whether it was enough of an improvement to justify an additional $60 was still hovering around in my mind. Turns out EA and Visceral will be padding "Dead Space 2" with adversarial multiplayer.
After leaked info about the multiplayer mode in "Dead Space 2" began to spread from the annual Gamestop managers convention, an EA rep went ahead and stepped in to confirm that "'Dead Space 2' will feature multiplayer where you'll be able to strategically dismember your friends for the first time."
Based on that statement, I'm given to assume that the multiplayer in "Dead Space 2" will be strictly adversarial, rather than co-op. This makes a certain amount of sense, given that the series has always been about heavily scripted scenes and that creepy, all-alone-in-space-with-monsters feel, neither of which would really work in co-op.
I'm still a bit curious how Visceral plans on making deathmatch work in "Dead Space 2." The controls in the single-player don't exactly allow for quick, twitchy movement, and I can't see multiplayer being all that fun if people are just standing toe-to-toe, shooting at one another. Here's hoping Visceral has a trick up their sleeve and that the whole mode isn't just a way to convince folks like me that there's more to this sequel than meets the eye.
RZA Will Be Playable In ‘DJ Hero 2′

Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA leaked his involvement in "DJ Hero 2" earlier this year, and the full "DJ Hero 2" track list confirmed that FreeStyleGames would be using his beats. Activision made everything nice and official today, though, and he'll be playable!
"I'm very excited to be involved with 'DJ Hero 2,'" RZA said in a press release. "As both a DJ and gamer from an early age, the game combines two of my passions."
Additionally, RZA mixed and produced two exclusive tracks — LL Cool J's "I Can't Live Without My Radio" Mixed With Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five doing "The Message" and Damian Marley's "Welcome To Jamrock" Mixed With Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven." He praised the developers he worked with and punctuated his message with a RZAism.
"I loved working with the team and am excited for the fans to hear the two brand-new mixes I put together just for this game," he explained. "Bong bong!"
RZA will accompany DJ Qbert, David Guetta, DJ Shadow in the sequel when it lands on October 19. Check out the RZA trailer that Activision put out below, and you'll get some more info straight from his mouth about what the chance to collaborate with the video game industry has meant to him. You'll also get a biographical note about his first turntables that may surprise you.

‘Mega Man Universe’ Gameplay Trailers Three Playable Mega Men (And Ryu)

Capcom offered a taste of what "Mega Man Universe" will be like in their last trailer for the game, but this week they put the spotlight on gameplay at long last. At least three editions of the Blue Bomber appeared in various peeks at the title, and all of them come tagged with a Ryu tease at the end.
"I can imagine that a lot of people who saw the first 'Mega Man Universe' trailer are confused and wondering how this game will play since that trailer didn't reveal much," Capcom global head of research and development Keiji Inafune said in a translated and subtitled introduction. "Now, I'm here to clear up the confusion. We'd like to show the first playable video and this time you will see more of how 'Mega Man Universe' actually works. I hope this video gets you excited and has you looking forward to more."
Here's what Mega Man (as seen on IGN), Rock Man (as seen at GameVideos) and Bad Box Art Mega Man (as seen on GameSpot) look like:

You have to appreciate Capcom's sense of humor with the last one there. I loved the art they put together for "Mega Man 9" and "Mega Man 10," but it's nice to know they can laugh about differences between box art and in-game depictions of their characters.
I'm not sure how I feel about the rendered look for Mega Man yet, but the world designs and motion look traditional enough. I am anxious to see what happens if Mega Man X's hadouken (assuming he's in there) and Ryu's hadouken collide though. Is one more powerful than the other?

How To Make Achievements Feel More Like An Achievement

Earlier this week I completed a challenge I set for myself way back in February of 2008: Get every achievement in "N+" on XBLA. If you've played the game, you know that the developers didn't make that very easy. The punishingly difficult platformer requires extraordinarily precise timing and reflexes. Tiny mistakes are usually rewarded with instant death. Finally finishing the game was a cathartic moment, and it made me wonder just how many other people had gone through the same trial.
Turns out that data is a little tricky to come by. Microsoft doesn't really give out exact sales numbers for their downloadable games, so I went to the next best thing. According to the "N+" leaderboards, 406,541 people have registered a score in the game's single-player campaign (as of August 30, 2010). In order to register a score, a player just needs to have beaten the first episode of the game, which can be accomplished in about 5 minutes.
(Obviously this doesn't include those people who only played the game offline, but considering "N+" is a downloadable game, and therefore required an Xbox Live connection to purchase, I'd wager that number of people is very small. Same goes for the number of people who gave up before finishing the first episode.)
So you have 406,541 players who, at the very least, finished the first episode. I then went and checked how many people registered a score on the last episode:
Number of Players With Registered Score On N+ Campaign Leaderboards - 406,541
Number of Players With Registered Score On N+ Final Episode Leaderboards - 8,621
Therefore:
Percent of Players Who Played "N+" And Actually Finished The Game - 2.12%
In layman's terms, just over 1 in every 50 people who play "N+" manage to finish the final level. That's sort of a remarkable statistic, no? Wouldn't it be cool to know that you're in such a small group of players, and wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft shared this info with you without having to dig through leaderboards? Yes, yes it would!
You can see my mock-up at the top of this post which would display the percent of players who have gotten a certain achievement. It's something that Valve has already done with every game on Steam, and would be a great addition to Xbox Live, PSN or even Apple's upcoming Game Center. This data exists, it's just a matter of bubbling it up to the surface.
‘Resident Evil 6′ Announcement Coming Soon, It Seems

Capcom said they wanted to heat up the Resident Evil game franchise again in time for "Resident Evil: Afterlife." Announcing "Resident Evil 6" could definitely accomplish that goal, and depending on how you interpret a recent Spanish-language interview, they may be planning to do just that.
"Given the great success which led to us 'Resident Evil 5,' we want 'Resident Evil 6' hits the market as soon as possible," Capcom global head of research and development Keiji Inafune told 3DJuegos (as translated by Google). "In fact, Capcom will have news about this soon."
Right now, Capcom still has a 3DS game to focus on, though, and he emphasized his excitement on that front.
"As for 'Resident Evil: Revelations,' our company is very committed to Nintendo 3DS because we think it is a platform that will offer many opportunities for companies both developers and users," Inafune explained. "For the same reason, we wish to keep intact the core title in the series and at the same time, possesses a high quality and surprise to fans of the series. I myself am really into this project."
So it sounds like we should be hearing about "RE6" fairly soon and ahead of a "Revelations" release that will be followed by the series' return to consoles. As for who will show up and what the premise will be, that's an interview for another day, but keep your eye on your RSS feeds for something soon.

‘Super Mario All-Stars’ Returning For Wii

A Nintendo release calendar entry seems to have confirmed a retailer blogger's assertion that "Super Mario All-Stars" (known in Japan as "Super Mario Collection") will be making a comeback on the Wii. The title, which originally sold more units than "Super Mario 64" on the SNES, looks to be getting repackaged with a few extras and shipping out as soon as this October.
An entry labeled "Super Mario Collection Special Pack" appears on Nintendo's official release calendar for October 21, according to some translation work by Andriasang. Its presence coincides with a blog post predicting such a game, based on a retailer briefing from Nintendo.
The blog post indicated that the game would come with a booklet and soundtrack CD, which could be pretty nifty. The original game included "Super Mario Bros.," "Super Mario Bros. 2," "Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" in the U.S.
The Wii edition doesn't have many public details to speak of at the moment, but its appearance does make you wonder if Nintendo would ever consider a sequel anthology with remastered "Super Mario World" and "Super Mario 64" ports for the Wii. Mario has starred in enough games since 1993, so there's no shortage of source material. If they feel extra generous, they could also consider remastering "Mario Tennis" — just so long as they stay clear of "Mario's Time Machine."
Would you pick up a new version of "Super Mario All-Stars" for the Wii? Which games do you think Nintendo should remaster if they decide to do a sequel? Share your responses in the comment section below.
‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops’ Multiplayer Hands-on Preview

If you've ever logged on to a gaming forum and searched for "Call of Duty," you invariably discovered lengthy discussions over whether Treyarch or Infinity Ward have produced the quintessential game in the franchise. With much of the Infinity Ward team moving on to EA, Treyarch has been charged with sedating the series' base. After some hands-on time with "Call of Duty: Black Ops" last night at an event in Los Angeles, I can say that it appears as if the studio has found a balance – at least within multiplayer – that just might satisfy everyone.
Before the development team allowed us to get any hands-on time, Treyarch designers David Vonderhaar and Dan Bunting gave a presentation showcasing what players can expect from the latest game in the "Call of Duty" franchise.
The developers discussed the game's new multiplayer features using three pillars that Treyarch focused on during development: Compete, Customize, and Create. While many features were shown, here's a rundown of new features I feel will get "Call of Duty" fans most excited to jump back into multiplayer.
Compete: Multiplayer Training Modes
Dan Bunting opened this section by discussing an entirely new mode in "Black Ops" multiplayer, Combat Training. "Before there was combat training, there was a dumb drone we called Larry," said Bunting. What was once a development tool which allowed the Treyarch team to test issues within the game, has given way to an entirely new mode in "Black Ops." An interesting new concept within the "Call of Duty" franchise, Combat Training allows the player to experience multiplayer gameplay, but replaces the threat of real online players with AI-controlled bots. What's more, the player can invite a friend into the match, allowing for co-op.
COD Points - Unlock Weapons And Perks With Currency
Experience points have been an important component of multiplayer in recent "Call of Duty" titles. Previously, when a player attained a new XP level they gained additional weapons, perks, etc. "Black Ops" is taking a slightly different approach to earning those items – they can be purchased with currency, called COD Points. "What you used to only unlock by level is now for sale," said David Vonderhaar. What makes this interesting is that a lower level player can now effectively outfit their soldier with the specific gear that they want, without necessarily having to achieve a higher XP level.
More importantly, the game's new currency allows for an all new multiplayer mode, Wager Match, that quickly became my favorite new feature.
